If you've been reading my emails from the past month or so, you might remember me mention the book Slow Productivity by Cal Newport. The TL;DR: 1๏ธโฃdo less 2๏ธโฃobsess over quality 3๏ธโฃwork at a natural pace. The book reflects on some of the greatest achievements in human history in art, science, ideas - and how the people who accomplished these feats (Jane Austen, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Isaac Newton, Jewel, to name a few) worked on them slowly, deeply, and over a long period of time.โ As someone (like all of us) who suffers from the entropy of modernity and the pseudo productivity it has us all addicted to, this philosophy has become deeply meaningful to me.โ Not only is slowing down in this way a small act of resistance to Capitalism and the (hopefully) current death rattle of "hustle culture",it also just produces higher quality work.โ

Some of the ways we accomplish this:โ
โ
๐ ๐ปMapping out more efficient ways to deliver the work - sending a well designed onboarding checklist to your client, scheduling ALL of the project meetings during the kickoff call, figuring out a thoughtful order of operations when it comes to passing work back and forth between the strategist and designer, etc etc etc etc!
๐ ๐ปUtilizing basic automations to sweat the small admin tasks - like setting up all of your client's google folders before a new project, creating a new Slack channel for them, and triggering a new Project List based on a template that assigns tasks and due dates for you.
๐ ๐ปRobust documentation ala a SOP Library -that stands for Standard Operating Procedures! SOPs include visual as well as written instructions, the purpose of the task, links to resources and tools needed to complete the task, and common questions a team member might have. Building up a functioning SOP library takes time, but the more you can contribute to it, the more time and headache you save over time.
No more wasting time asking around on how to complete a task - or worse - having to redo work because it wasn't done correctly the first time.
And when systems are in place, YOU, Dear Agency Owner, get to do the thing only YOU can do: sinking into that creative space where you get all of your best ideas and solutions.
Following my own advice: I'm taking on fewer clients than ever before.

I had a call this week with a woman who makes gorgeous handmade + VERY custom client gifts. The gifts are each their own little piece of art. One piece took her six coats of paint and four hours standing in front of a laser cutter, making sure nothing caught fire. She is doing that DEEP WORK ๐ ๐ป Her project cycle is three months, start to finish. And for those three months, she does not have time to generate new leads. "I can't do the delivery and work on my own business at the same time," she...
I've been doing market research calls with creative agency owners for the past few months. I wanted to know the words they use to describe their work, what they think they're doing really well behind the scenes, and what's actually broken. Basically, I wanted to ask: what's going on with agency owners? Here's what I found! ๐ New here? I'm Devin Lee I optimize your offers by removing you as the bottleneck so you can serve more clients without sacrificing quality. Get a taste of what I do: ๐ฅ...
Airtable was recently acquired by Bending Spoons. All signs point to this being VERY BAD for Airtable users, and the clock is now ticking to find a new tool. If you haven't heard about this, Lex Roman wrote a fantastic story HERE on Revenue Rulebreaker. (Be sure to subscribe to Revenue Rulebreaker HERE for more important news on small biz!) Airtable is a BIG part of my business. I lean on it heavily for my internal admin, I build it for almost every client I work with, and my popular...
